Listening is the skill that improves fastest with the least effort, if you listen to the right things. The wrong thing is native-speed radio at A1, which teaches you only that Finnish is fast. The right things are below, by level.
A1 to A2
- Yle Selkouutiset (yle.fi/selkouutiset): daily news in easy Finnish, as a five-minute TV bulletin with subtitles and as radio with the text. The single best resource in the country. Read the text first, then listen, then listen without reading.
- Yle Kielikoulu (yle.fi/kielikoulu): Yle programmes with subtitles where you can tap any word for a translation. Children's programmes and documentaries are the easiest.
- DailyFinnish on YouTube: short, slow, with the words on screen.
- Children's TV on Yle Areena: Pikku Kakkonen. Slow, clear, repetitive, and Finnish children are learning the same words you are.
B1
- Yle Uutiset selkosuomeksi radio: the radio version of the easy news, slightly faster.
- Podcasts: Yle Areena has hundreds. Start with interview shows about everyday topics; hosts speak clearly and repeat.
- Uusi Juttu: audio news in spoken Finnish, for hearing puhekieli at a comfortable pace.
The method
- Pick one five-minute piece. Not an hour. Five minutes you will actually finish.
- Listen once for the topic. What is it about? One sentence in your head.
- Read the text or subtitles. Mark five words you did not know. Look them up on the word pages.
- Listen again with the text. Then once more without.
- Shadow one sentence. Say it aloud at the same time as the speaker. This is the fastest route to Finnish rhythm.
Do this daily and Selkouutiset will feel slow within two months. That is the moment to add a podcast.
Dictation
Dictation exercises, where you type what you hear, are being added to the practice hub as the course audio is recorded.
