Job interviews in Finnish

Updated 19 September 20263 min readB1

A Finnish job interview is usually forty minutes, two people across a table, and a list of questions that does not vary much between a hospital and a warehouse. Prepare the answers below in Finnish, and you will spend the interview talking about the job instead of searching for words.

The questions and answers that work

Kerro vähän itsestäsi. Tell me a little about yourself.
Olen sairaanhoitaja ja olen työskennellyt Nepalissa viisi vuotta. I am a nurse and I have worked in Nepal for five years.
Miksi haluat tähän työhön? Why do you want this job?
Haluan työskennellä teillä, koska… I want to work for you because…
Mitkä ovat vahvuutesi? What are your strengths?
Olen tarkka ja tulen hyvin toimeen ihmisten kanssa. I am careful and I get on well with people.
Entä heikkoutesi? And your weaknesses?
Suomen kieleni ei ole vielä täydellinen, mutta opiskelen joka päivä. My Finnish is not perfect yet, but I study every day.
Millainen suomen kielen taito sinulla on? What is your Finnish like?
Puhun suomea tasolla B1. Ymmärrän hyvin ja puhun mielelläni. I speak Finnish at B1 level. I understand well and I like speaking.
Milloin voisit aloittaa? When could you start?
Voin aloittaa heti. / Voin aloittaa kahden viikon kuluttua. I can start immediately. / I can start in two weeks.
Mikä on palkkatoiveesi? What is your salary expectation?
Palkkatoiveeni on 2 800 euroa kuukaudessa, työehtosopimuksen mukaan. My salary expectation is 2,800 euros a month, according to the collective agreement.
Onko sinulla kysyttävää? Do you have any questions?
Millainen on tyypillinen työpäivä? Onko työ vuorotyötä? What is a typical working day like? Is it shift work?
Kiitos haastattelusta. Thank you for the interview.

Three things to know

  1. Salaries follow the collective agreement. Say työehtosopimuksen mukaan (according to the collective agreement) and you have answered the salary question correctly for most jobs. Unions publish the tables; see work and jobs.
  2. Probation is normal and mutual. Koeaika of up to six months lets both sides end the contract quickly. It is not a sign of doubt.
  3. Sign only what you can read. Ask for the contract in advance, run it through the contract words and ask about anything unclear. Employers expect this.
